Black Copper Marans (pronounced Muh-rans) most known for their large, dark, reddish-brown egg. They are truly a must have within any flock. They will contribute 150-200 eggs a year.
Our breeding flock is comprised of a diverse genetic pool; Jeane Presley and Davis, Channing Grisham, Bulbs of Fire as well as Phoenix Farms all contributing. The Marans is well built, of average size but has a commanding presence. They give of the impression of strength, and mass but are a gentle, docile breed by nature. The roosters have a large single comb, wide shoulders and copper hackles and saddle feathers. The hens have copper hackles, and beautiful iridescent black feathers covering their bodies. Both will have orange eyes and feathered feet as per standard of perfection. I choose to breed as close to standard as possible but also put heavy importance on temperament within this breed especially. Preserving the kind natural demeanor of this breed is very important. All of our hens and roosters are incredibly personable, affectionate to both us and their flock mates. Our roosters are loyal, kind, protective keepers of their hens. They are cold hardy, and an excellent dual purpose bird due to their size. They are a later maturing breed; don’t except any eggs until around 6-7 months! Roosters, within this breed, who mature slower are often more desirable for breeding purposes.
the history
First recognized in a port town called Marans, France, as a marsh, farmyard breed, The Marans actually began when fighting game, originating in Indonesia and India, were brought to Marans and then bred to their local wild fowl. Those original fowl were improved with the addition of the Croad Langshans, known for its meat quality and dark eggs. There are 9 recognized types of Marans today, The Black Copper Marans being the one we chose to focus breed. In the future we hope to expand and grow our Blue Copper Marans flock to be able to share in 2022.
