Legbar

The Legbar is a crested, autosexing breed that carries the blue egg gene and lays a round, blue to greenish coloured egg, sometimes adorned with pale purple spots. They will contribute 160-240 eggs a year.

Both males and females sport crests and white earlobes. Legs are clean, and yellow. Legbars come in a variety of colors, we keep Cream and Crele.

They are a friendly, hardy breed, who enjoys foraging. The males are easy to work with but can have an uptick in hormones early on. We bred for mild temperament and longer backs for our resulting roosters.

Legbars are an auto-sexing breed; this means males and females are distinguishable at hatch. Males have blurry patterns with a white dot on their heads and females have a clear chipmunk pattern.

the history

Our lineage comes from Greenfire Farms 2011-2013 stock. The Legbar has a relatively short history, dating back to 1931. After many efforts by two men, Professor R.C. Punnett and Professor Michael Pease of England, this auto sexing breed called the Legbar was born and was recognized by the Poultry Club of Britain in 1958. They are still considered rare and in the 1970’s even faced extinction but thankfully due to the interest in coloured eggs, they have made a bold comeback.
